Chapter 3: Armed or Unarmed

You will get a base wage for working unarmed security, somewhere between minimum wage and twelve or thirteen dollars an hour, usually. You will get a few more dollars an hours for working as an armed guard. Which should you do?

Let us assume that you have no problem with the idea of being armed. I have found that working armed is roughly equivalent to the danger of working unarmed. There is the occasionally crazy guy who feels threatened by a gun, and will possibly attack you because you are wearing it. Most will be deterred by the fact you have it on, of course. If you are unarmed, most will not feel threatened enough by your presence to attack you, but there is always that one guy who thinks that he can beat up an unarmed guard.

I mostly have worked unarmed, because there are much more unarmed positions available than there are armed ones. Some agencies do not wish you to work as both armed and unarmed, so you will need to explore your options.
